Main Street Books is so happy to be hosting local author Edward Patrick Akinyemi. Edward has recently published a book called Community Heroes: What a Year as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member Taught Me About Community Development. Join us for a book talk and signing on Friday, June 21 at 6pm.

About the book:

Whether you’re a regular citizen looking to do good in your community or an AmeriCorps VISTA member about to start your year of service, this book is perfect if you want to make your community a better place.

Learn about such issues as why it may be important to stop trying to change the world and focus on being a hero in your own community. Understand why the barriers to employment that disenfranchised people face are such powerful impediments to progress. Also, learn how to discuss social change without the conversation becoming emotionally and politically charged.

About the author:

Edward was born and raised in the Netherlands to Nigerian parents. During the few exciting periods of his life, he also lived in Spain, Denmark, North Carolina, and now Mansfield. He spent the less exciting periods of his life getting his Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Sport & Event Management. After a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA member at the North End Community Improvement Collaborative (NECIC), he decided to write a book about his experience as a VISTA member and what he learned about social impact and community development. He hopes that his book will inspire others to serve their communities in any way they can.
